Posted on Thursday, September 7th, 2006 at 2:25 pmDuring WWII, did the Allies know anything about the Holocaust?
The British and Americans knew that the Nazis were anti-Semitic but did they have any idea about the holocaust? Surely they must have taken aerial photos of the sights. How did the Nazis keep it quiet? The Allies must have had agents in Germany – how were they deceived? After the war, obviously it all came out but I find it hard to believe that the Nazis could hide the killing of the 6 million people although I assume they must have as otherwise the Allies would have bombed the camps or launched commando raids I assume.
N.B. This is a conspiracy theory – I’m not for a second implying the British and Americans etc let the holocaust happen.
*EDIT* That should say NOT A CONSPIRACY – sorry – i’m not mental
How to stir up a hornet’s nest: the Allies knew that the Nazi government had a “war” of sorts against Jews, gypsies, dissidents and others well before the “discovery of the camps” in 1945:
►In the late summer of 1942, Mr. Karski, who was then a 33-year-old clandestine diplomat of the Polish government-in-exile in London, was preparing for a secret mission to carry information from Nazi-occupied Poland to London and Washington. Before leaving, he was visited by two leaders of the Jewish underground who had managed to briefly leave the Warsaw Ghetto. They told him about what they called “Hitler’s war against the Polish Jews.”
They said that ♦by their calculations, more than 1.8 million Jews had already been killed by the Germans and that 300,000 of the 500,000 Jews jammed into the Warsaw Ghetto had been deported to an obscure village about 60 miles from Warsaw, where the Germans had set up a death camp.♦
They asked him if he could carry their information to Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. They also asked if he would be willing to enter the Ghetto and see for himself what was happening.
Mr. Karski, who was blessed with a photographic memory, agreed….◄

This knowledge has since caused a simmering resentment against the Allies for not bombing the concentration camps where victims were being killed. Could they not bomb Treblinka and knock it out of commission — perhaps allow some to escape? It is possible, but apparently no such orders were given.
►IN World War 2 (WW2) Polish resistance hero and diplomat Jan Karski was smuggled into the Warsaw Ghetto, escaped to England and attempted to tell the world about the Jewish Holocaust – however Allied authorities did not believe him and would not act . By way of example, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, an adviser to Roosevelt and a Jew, interviewed Jan Karski in 1943 and commented: “I am unable to believe what you have told me.” When pressed by another Polish diplomat present, Frankfurter responded: “I did not say that this young man was lying. I said that I was unable to believe what he told me. There is a difference.” (see: here ).
In Jan Karski’s own words: “I met with many powerful leaders in London and Washington … I was a nobody during the war. I was a little, anonymous agent. My superiors were saying, “Don’t provoke, don’t antagonize” … [I] answered questions if I knew the answers… Perhaps it [the Holocaust] did seem unbelievable. What happened to the Jews was unprecedented; humanity was not prepared for it, and the Jews were not prepared for it …The Jews in Europe were totally helpless; they had no government, no country, no representation at the inter-ally conferences.” Even after the Jewish Holocaust was widely accepted as a reality no Allied policy eventuated: “by that time, the basic Allied War Strategy was already determined.”◄
