What does “epic” mean in World of Warcraft?

I’ve noticed that many high level players in world of warcraft have what they call “epic” armor and weapons, and I’m wondering, what exactly does that mean?

Its a ‘tier’ of armor. Or ‘rarity’ of the armor.

Legendary is orange.
Epic Purple.
Rare blue.
etc etc.

Currently lvl 70′s are usually stocked with Epic’s. (or all purple gear).
Not to many legendary’s around still.

Most everyone has a few blues. You Can obtain blue armor at very early levels
