Mr. Giusti’s Wacky Project
Mr. Giusti is building a cage for his new bird. He wants to make the cage in the shape of a bird. Who knows why, but it seems to work well for this POW. Mr. Giusti pulls out his tape measure and finds the following measurements:
He needs pieces of 2 X 4 in the following lengths:
1 1/6’, 2 3/4’, 2 1/4’, 7/24’, 3 3/12’, 1 3/8’
He also needs metal rods of 1” diameter in the following lengths:
2 3/7’, 1 5/14’, 3 34/56’, 2 34/42’, 1 4/7’, 1 3/7’
(1) What length of 2 X 4 do I need to buy to cover the project(exactly)?
(2) What length of 1” metal rod do I need to buy to cover the project(exactly)?
1) First combine all the whole numbers to isolate the fractions ( it is only addition so you may do this)
1+2+2+3+1 = 9
Now the fractions need to be combined ( ill do it one a at a time)
1/6 + 3/4
2/12 + 9/12 = 11/12
11/12+3/12= 14/12
14/12 + 1/4
14/12 + 3/12 =17/12
17/12 + 7/24
34/24+7/24= 41/24
41/24 + 3/8
41/24 + 9/24 = 50/24
9 + 50/24
9 + 25/12
9+ 2 + 1/12
** 11 1/12′ = 11 and 1/12 of an inch. **
2) Same Process
2+1+3+2+1+1 = 10 +1 = 11
3/7 + 4/7 = 1 ** ( add 1 to whole numbers)
3/7 + 5/14
6/14 + 5/14 = 11/14
11/14 + 34/56
44/56 + 34/56= 78/56 Reduce => 39/28
39/28 + 34/42
1638/1176 + 952/1176 = 2590/1176
2+11+ 238/1176
