Sword Sleeping
In Beowulf…did he promiss Hrothgar that he would kill Grendel and restore peace to the land?

I actually have lots of questions
Did Grendel kill one of Beowulfs sleeping men, and then is seized by Beowulf?
Did beowulf draw his sword and slay Grendel?
Did Grendels mother attack Herot and Carry off Grendels severed arm, claw and shoulder?
Did Beowulfs followers cremate their king, and sing his praises?

Beowulf tells Hrothgar when he arrives at Heorot that he has come to kill Grendel. I don’t remember that he explicitly says anything about restoring peace, but since Grendel is the only known disturbance there, restoring peace may be implicit in what Beowulf says he will do.

Grendel seizes one of Beowulf’s men, eats him, reaches for Beowulf, and realizes too late that Beowulf is someone he doesn’t want to tangle with. Beowulf, who has DISarmed for the confrontation, seizes Grendel’s arm and holds on until Grendel, desperate to get away, wrenches off his own arm and flees. So Beowulf did NOT use his sword. In fact, he doesn’t use his own sword the entire time he’s in Denmark. When he goes into the swamp to fight Grendel’s mother, Unferth lends him an heirloom sword, and when it proves useless against her, he picks up a sword that he finds in her den (evidently one that belonged to one of her earlier victims) and kills her with it.

So yes, Grendel’s mother attacked Heorot the night after Beowulf killed Grendel, and she killed Hrothgar’s friend Aeschere and carried off his body, along with Grendel’s arm. They find his head on the edgeof the swamp the next morning.

And yes, Beowulf’s people cremated him and sang his praises, but this happens more than fifty years after the Grendel episode. In the intervening years, Beowulf has returned home, been offered the Geatish throne, turned it down, been offered it a second time and accepted, reigned fifty years, and been killed fighting a dragon that has begun ravaging his country.
