Boss Stuck In The Stone Age? Four Things You Can Do

You need to remind him or her that even early cave men adapted to change. Fire was discovered. The wheel was invented. And, here s/he is, a million years later.  To move your boss from mudstuck to modern, make use of the four A’s.

A    Attitude.  Maintain a positive one as you work to show him that times are changing and so is the definition of what you can contribute. Don’t get discouraged if this process is taking longer than you’d like. Remain optimistic and remind yourself periodically of what Colin Powell says: “Optimism is a force-multiplier.”

A    Alliances    According to author Warren Bennis, “Leaders form strategic alliances.” Demonstrate your leadership by forming an alliance with someone who can influence your boss. Or, form an alliance with someone who has already made her boss a modern man, and Learn How she did it.

A    Assess        Here’s your chance to put your understanding of psychology to work. (If You Don‘t have such an understanding, get thee to a library!) Try to figure out why your boss is clinging so ferociously to the past. Once you have some insight into what his fears or answers or insecurities are, you can offer more targeted assurances that the new will soon be as comfortable as the old is now.

A    Aspire        There’s a reason why you want to bring your boss into the 21st century: you know that he, you, and the company itself will benefit from his new outlook. This knowledge reflects your faith in an improved future. You aspire to better things and want him to do the same. Rehearse (at least ten times) with a trusted friend or colleague a non-threatening discussion you can have with your change-resistant boss. Without sounding pedantic, explain the wisdom of the saying, “When you’re through changing, you’re through!”
