The Haunted Hotel At Bar Harbor

A strange incident happened to me last summer when I spent my holiday at a rather age-old summer resort hotel at Bar Harbor near the mighty Atlantic Ocean; a recent accident happened to me that brought the need of recuperation and above all a comfortable rest under the canopy of the peaceful salty air. I was getting on sixty with all the symptoms of growing old age that compelled me to obey doctor’s orders; a paunchy middle, a crown of baldness and a shortness of breath was a reminder. Yet, an adventure of seeing ghosts in my room, especially at night, added a bit of spice to my holiday. Yes I had the visit of a ghostly specter that at first it was quite spooky but when I learned of her demise the fright almost faded away: curiosity was my weapon of bravery.

The small hotel, named ‘Ocean Breeze’ was quite a vintage structure, built of brick and stone, topped with tiled slopping roof and styled in the architecture of the late 1800′s; it had the look of an aged English manor house with vines tendrils clinging to its facade. Yet, the twenty odd rooms on its two stories were sturdily built with weather-aged timber beams and its worn wooden parquet floor signed with the continued polishing through the ages; the furnishings were quite adequate with heavy wooden furniture that was quite adequate for guests. The room was fitted with dormer windows with a view of the ocean and the boats that sailed on its waters, a large hearth that warmed one on a cold night, all for the convenience for the guests.

Little did I know that the hotel where I lodged for my two week vacation had quite a scary reputation of housing a ghost or in some tongues many ghostly specters.  There was a legend abounded in the lips of the natives of the area that told of the history of the hotel. “T’was not built first as hotel, no siree “, they gossiped, “The pile of bricks and stone was built by a miserly chap, quite well off. – don’t know why he built it in these parts – didn’t take kindly to the nearby neighbors. Quite a miserable looking black attired figure, sort of like a crabbed monkey, but a bit bigger; His features were quite frightening with hollow cheeks, sunken dark eyes and grizzled hair.” All spoke of fear as if he was the devil himself when they saw him.

” He had a wife; they would natter, “fat and witchy she was, going around all in black on her fleshy body, same as the black cloth of her spouse. But did she have a foul tongue, wow!  Never had a good word for anyone and always a complaint to the shopkeepers around here; when she entered a shop the other customers skit skaddled away. She was quite an unpleasant woman by all means.

”Yet they had a daughter”, they continued in their gossip, “She was like a fairy princess in her tender years according to the servants who remained employed despite the nagging tongue of the witch of a mother. The girl was never out of sight of her mother, locked in the house for years, rarely to take the fresh air.  According to the fishermen a true story was told; they spoke of the night when they spotted a lithe creature dressed in a sheer flowing gown, barefoot in her steps, walking to the waters of ocean and just continued walking until she disappeared within the waves. Well, the fishermen took action, but their searching for the girl proved hopeless. The creature was simply taken probably by the goddesses of the sea, never to been again. Wal’ after that the miserable couple vanished and the entrepreneurs that bought it, turned it into a hotel after a bit of remodeling – been a popular spot for retired gentlemen and ladies ever since.

The second night at the stay at that hostel I was somewhat woken in the middle of the night by the salty smell of the ocean and the roar of the winds. I turned on the bed lamp and the first thing my blurred eyes rested on was a young and pretty young lady all in white sitting quite near to my bed, which off course put the fright in me. Her bright eyes stared at me longingly and her features had a melancholy look. Then l noticed that she was quite drenched by the cold waters of the sea from her straggly brown hair to her white gossamer gown, which revealed a delightful slim body. On the floor under the chair where she sat there was a small pool of water mixed with bits of seaweed strands..

I am a person who wakes up quite slowly and it takes me a few moments to return from the land of Nod. But when I am awake I am quite awake.

When I saw the young girl sitting near my bed I had at first a bit of a fright, which turned into annoyance. There was two or three young ladies coupled with their husbands registered at the hostelry, and I thought it was rather rude of one to them to wake me for a bit of dalliance at this ungodly hour, after all I am in my elder years and amorous relations was somewhat past tense for me. I sat up on my bed and was ready to ask the lady for an explanation. No sooner I had opened my mouth to speak, something mysterious happened; her pale features slowly melted in the form of a gruesome skull and her lithe body was just bones uncovered. Then the apparition vanished quite suddenly.

Well You Can imagine the state I was in with frightened features on the white of my face, shiny with beads of sweat. After all it was the middle of the night and seeing a ghostly image was a bit too hard on my heartbeat which pounded the state of my fright; I was unable to shake off the felling of horror of fear and to return to a restful sleep. As I tried to rest the smell of the sea and the roar of the winds ended with the vanishing of the specter, even the small pool of sea water on the floor vanished. I knew what I have seen and it was not a continuation of a dream; in fact it was living nightmare.

The following morning I was determined to find out the mystery that enveloped me and disturbed my sleep, but after a moment of thought I decided not to mention it to the staff of the hotel. Those who were employed there would remark that it was a bad dream and most likely the desk clerk would offer to give me another room. Then I was determined to stay on in that room, as I was decidedly interested in this ghostly figure, even though it was quite frightening to be sure.

The next night my sleep was disturbed again in the middle of the night. This time I was awakened by whispering sounds of two elderly persons, a man and woman arguing back and forth. Then something or someone came along near my bed still arguing and I distinctly heard the voice of the women grow fainter as its sound faded away. The thing near my bed seemed to be rubbing his hands and cracking his knuckles and whispering an evil sound. There was no roar of winds and no smell of the sea, but I felt the despicable thing near me. I switched on the bed lamp, but there was nothing to be seen in the lighted room.

The remainder of my holiday at the night hours I heard nothing, but a queer feeling came over me at the last night a strange and uncanny sensation enveloped me, as if a cold breath passed over me and stroked my features with a touch of kiss on the cheeks and I remarked as I awoke in my sleep, ‘It’s back again.’  I heard the roar of the winds and smell of the sea, but the specter was absent.  I was quite disturbed by this strange phenomenon and I tried to settle back into a restful sleep.

The natives hereabout told of the young lady’s infatuation with a brawny fisherman which disgusted the thoughts of the miserly chap and his witch of a wife. ”Ayy, that was pure love’, they would gossip among themselves when they saw them entwined in their arms. And these citizens knew in their imagination that the young couple’s flirtation in the bare of their skins and the untamed love on the rippling waves of the sea.

At first her gruesome parents berated her for her for her dalliance with man of the sea, as he was a lowly laborer and beneath her station of life. But the more they scolded the more she founds ways to meet her man in the evening hours and to consummate their love. She was betrayed by a mealy-mouth neighbor and the she was locked in a room in the second floor, never to see the light of day, even her garments were removed and only a white shift was given to her. But love found its way and through a ladder, a trusty servant and an open window that enabled the lovers to meet.

Yet one night when the young maiden was waiting at the open window, she heard of the loss of her man at sea; without thought and with tears in her eyes she managed to scale the wall of the house with knotted sheets and run with dainty steps to the sea and find her love. The folks about rumored that they met in the deep waters and the girl was never seen again.

…. and I slept in that remodeled room where the girl was bound..
