Avatar How not cost more than Spider-Man 3 to make?

I felt like every second of Avatar was a technological marvel that you may be cost a lot to produce. Whereas Spider-Man 3 had a story a little less original, and much of the scenes were just normal people who are filmed live CGI and live without the normal places.
