I need a quick answer. Out of 2001 and Galaxy Quest, which was your favourite space movie?
I’ve limited to the two, because I need specific feedback. (BTW I love both films)… but on the one hand you have this visually awesome epic which even the director cannot explain, and on the other hand you have this modern tale of human nature, ranging from total apathy to fan-worship, and the resolution of the two. Plus some go-to-hell special effects. what’s your opinion? I need it now!
Cool! Two of my favorite films that are fun to watch for wildly different reason’s.
“2001″ was for me, a coming of age film. Made at the height of the space race and just before the lunar landings. It showed where we could go and almost how to get there. I couldn’t get enough of it when it first came out. Needless to say, it left quite an impression. What happen to space exploration after the end of the Apollo era was quite heartbreaking for me at the time. Only now are we getting back into the swing of things for exploration on a grand scale.
It was also ground breaking in it showed just how boring and spectacular space travel really is. The hand crafted special effects (CGI was barely a dream back then), raised the bar of making an SF to a high art form cinema. Something that George Pal in the 50′s only wished he could of done. The technical work behind “2001″ open the doors to all sorts of later SF films and is still the benchmark that other films and shows try to archive.
“Galaxy Quest” is nearly the opposite to “2001″. It doesn’t take itself seriously. It spoofs nearly every SF cliché ever thought of. But its done with great care and it shows what a good script and acting crew can do for a film. Its a hoot to watch (its a rainy day favorite at our star parties).
Now, I would go a step further and ask you to watch “Forbidden Planet” (which is partly based on the play, “King Lear”) and compare it to the above two films and see how far the SF film has come.
Now as an aside. I’m also a huge fan of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″. And have quite the selection of 50′s and 60′s era SF films (the good, the bad and the awful).
