Nassau – Pirates of the Caribbean Refuge

Nassau – Refugio Pirates of the Caribbean

by Cherie Pugh

Cherie Pugh discovered the true story of the pirates of Nassau when browsing through the Caribbean in a traditional wooden boat. She found that the court records of his trial in London, and spent years researching and writing

"Mary Read – Sailor, Soldier," Pirata.

This pirate yarn end is available as an ebook or paperback www.womanpirate.com

After Queen Anne's War, European and British soldiers and sailors in particular, were left to beg for bread at all remote European colonies. Many of those stranded in the Caribbean were forced to cut firewood in the forest, hopeless life that unites them in close-knit fraternity. When did to sea as pirates, they were united by the Welsh Captain Henry Jennings, who led an attack against a Spanish rescue camp and took away a fortune.

[For more information about pirate life, see my article

"The Real Pirates of the Caribbean "]

But the war with Spain was over, and the pirates were already outside the law, armed with all the European powers against them. So the former base was pirate Captain Jennings Mission: the port of Nassau on the island of Providence in the Bahamas. This was directly in line with trade European Americans and African colonies, the triangle of goods, sugar and slaves who became rich from England, and built their western cities as Bristol and Liverpool. Like all boats had to go through the 'wind' in this sense, each boat will have to run the gauntlet pirate. The rich merchants largely sufficient attention to the protection of the Navy, and their ships sailed in convoy.

Jennings joined the pirates in Captain Mission code. He insisted on the honor of the Brothers of the Sea, claiming they were the only real gentlemen, the well-born being, but a pack of wolves tired of the defenseless and weak. The pirates came from 80% in Britain, living in extreme poverty and lawlessness, and have suffered from terrible injustice, chose not to tolerate it.

Each company pirate on board each vessel chosen a captain to guide them when 'chasing or being chased and a mayor, which was to protect the rights of men the master. When in Nassau, these captains and mayors form the Council of Nassau, who heard the complaints and tried to keep peace, not only among the pirates, but among the pirates and the islanders and the occasional Governor appointed by the British government.

The pirate Edward Teach, Blackbeard or as he called himself, he could not comply with humanitarian norms were not welcome in Nassau. In fact, Blackbeard and his crew were based in St. Thomas, and then the continent American.

Some of the pirates as Captain Cockram of Harbour Island, married women island, founded families, and made significant contributions to their small settlements. Captain Cockram accurately compiled a table of the Bahamas from notes and bits of maps, navigator, and presented his work with the Governor ungrateful Woodes Rogers. He was also involved in building small forts that saved the islanders when they were attacked, and in organizing the defense of the island effective.

John Haman designed and built the pirate ships in the Harbour Island in the Bahamas, and based his designs on the sloops of the pirates of Malacca "Quick to attack, to run faster," which are based on the Arab dhow. Little Draught and agile, the pirate sloops were much better to navigate the treacherous reefs and shoals of the Caribbean. Its fleet of small sloops, schooners fast, all with the new sails and wings of birds during bows, slipped in the water under the slightest of breezes. Despite or because of, its smaller size, which easily surpassed, and sailed out-out-fought the clumsy square sails, huge Navy ships. The Netherlands had provided an effective defense against the Spanish invasion using small fishing boats with guns light from the huge Spanish galleons, and lessons were not lost on these pirates. Thousands of flourished in the Caribbean for 1715, in companies of hundreds of men, in the fleets of fast ships.

The British Navy was totally at a loss, far from home, with a crew sick and discouraged, were maintained only on the basis of a discipline so hard it caused riots. The poor sailors, dying of hunger, most abducted by their own governments, probably dreamed of being captured by pirates, and become rich and free, and you could not be relied on to fight with the desperation of the pirates. And as the commanders of the armed made fortunes under escort merchant ships, sometimes demanding up to a quarter of the cargo, and also contributes to the disappearance of trade in the area, its commitment to actual destruction of the pirates could be questioned.

When King George lost patience with the inability of its navy to meet the pirates, who cleverly offered unconditional forgiveness to the first pirates. Within a few months, half of the pirates of Nassau had gone home, happy ending to a long exile away from their families. Bennett Governor of Bermuda sent his son to sail straight into the port of Nassau, and invite the pirates to take Bermuda The Pardon. Henry Jennings immediately went to Bermuda, hundreds of pirates with him.

Then the king sent the captain to take back Woodes Rogers Pirates of Nassau. During Queen Anne's War, Rogers Spanish had captured enough gold to finance the campaign in England against French domination. When he sailed with his fleet in Nassau, Captain Vane received him with fire ships, and forced him to leave. However, that night, supporters of Vane melted away from him. Given their love of freedom, and Vane's reputation for arrogance, they chose to live as the English in an English colony, with a Governor, not as the subjects of a pirate king. When the governor went out again the next morning, Vane only stayed long enough to fire a salvo of him, and then fled through the impossibly narrow eastern channel. Rackam Anne Bonny and Jack sailed with him. The Pirate Mary Read was held in Nassau, still dressed as a man, and sought forgiveness.

[For more information on the female pirate, see my article

"Mary Read and Anne Bonny - Women Pirates of the Caribbean"]

Woodes Governor Rogers was an ambitious Puritan, with little time for women, and none of the brothers. He did not understand the layout of the pirates to surrender, and was sure it would be mutiny against him. Rogers had taken hundreds of settlers with him from war-torn Europe, but the rains brought the fever, and buried most of them within weeks. The brothers farm and when he insisted that slaves to build strong against a Spanish attack was expected, many returned to the sea.

After a drive successfully, arrogance and contempt for pirate code Vane lost him the leadership of his pirate fleet Rackam the handsome and popular Jack. Under Rackam captaincy, the pirates prospered, and after a savage delight in Tortuga Tom Moody at Christmas, during which Anne Bonny revealed his true identity to Rackam, proposed to divide the booty and ships, and seek forgiveness.

They returned to Nassau, persuaded the governor to defend their colony against any invasion of the forces Spanish, and establish a commercial enterprise. As there was a new war with Spain on the horizon, the Governor was terrorized by right of a Spanish attack, and had to accept. When the Spanish finally did attack, the Brothers pardoned easily refuse, but the governor Rogers still feared them.

Then the governor learned that Jack Rackam intended to pay the first husband of Anne Bonny, as was now the mother of the son of Jack, and he wanted to marry her. Ana Rogers reported like a slut, threatened with a beating, and said that Jack handle the whip. Within days, Anne had tricked his way aboard the fastest boat in the harbor, one of John Haman own sloops and Rackam old crew were back in the account.

When naval commanders based on colonies appealed to the local governors of money to equip the fleet of small boats, they were finally able to defy the pirates. When Rogers sailed to Nassau, had sloops with him, but dared not go through the narrow channel Vane eastern port of Nassau. However, Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet again to be captured by naval corvettes those trapped in the marshes of the shallow rivers in the main of America, and attacked them in pieces. Jack also was finally Rackam captured by a Navy sloop Jamaica, despite the nature of women in his team struggled against their attackers almost alone.

[For more information about the British Government the slaughter of these pirates,

see my article "The End Pirates of the Caribbean "]

Any historian of the Pirates of the Caribbean must wonder what would have happened if the pirates had refused to Nassau surrender. The ease with which half of them Spanish repel attack confirms that have been beyond the powers of the British army to take their Nassau massive, square-rigged ships. If Charles Vane had not been so arrogant, and if Henry Jennings had not been so convinced that forgiveness was in the best interest of pirates, which could take place the port indefinitely. That most of them chose to leave this haven and home shows that indeed the exiles, forced to piracy to survive. The rest had trouble giving up a life of freedom and wealth is hardly surprising at a time to be rich and free went beyond the hope of a poor man, unless your dream came true, and was captured by pirates.

The final pirate yarn is now available as an ebook or paperback www.womanpirate.com
