What is the difference between a RPG and an Adventure Game?

an RPG generaly lets you play through 1 character who You Can change to Your Own liking, choosing everything from what there weapons are to what there hair looks like. and generaly they tend to have a non-linear story of multiple paths to go down to end in the same result.

an adventure game generaly lets you play as one (or more) character(s) who you cant change too much other than weapons and things, and the line the plot goes down generaly instead of giving you multiple paths that meet in vaguely similar results they tend to have a line to do every single time
