How can I make sure all my downloaded roms work?

I’ve downloaded a few but they seem not to work. I’ve download from GBA games to NDS but only one has work so far

is it a speical emulator I have to download, Do I have to save it as a speical type of file. Help

BTW the emulator I have are snes9x, VisualBoyAdvance, desmume

Please help and I know what i’m doing is illegal.
