I was just watching the lord of the rings return of the king and im wondering where they leave to in the end?

In the end frodo and bilbo and gandalf and the elves leave on a ship and say they are leaving Middle Earth. Where are they going though? ive read the books a few years back and i cant remember from that either. And do they leave middle earth so man can rule there? And doesnt sam become mayor of the shire?

Bilbo and Frodo were accorded a place of honor to sail with the elves (so did Sam when he got old since he too became a Ringbearer and it was said the Gimli joined Legolas when he sailed after Aragorn died). It is not a symbolic place where the “dead” go. It is actually a place far into the West over the Seas where the Eldar (elves) go after they become weary of Middle Earth. The Elves were permitted to to depart Middle Earth and come to the Ancient West and to Avallone which is the haven and city of the Eldar on Tol Eressea, the city nearest to Valinor which is where the Valar (gods) dwell

The elves leave for the undying lands, so that the new age of Men can begin.
Sam does become mayor of the shire. I believe as the last ring bearer, he is the last to go to the undying lands. But it’s been a long time since I read them also.
