What is the riddle of the Sphinx a metaphor for the life of Oedipus, why it is ironic that solved the enigma?
First, of course, the picture on the puzzle is a metaphor for the life of any human, since each one of us crawling on all fours in infancy (in the Morning " life), walks upright on two feet, at Its Best, and probably relies on a cane in old age, afternoon or evening of life. In the case of Oedipus', which reaches tragic night early, and now the cane he uses when he goes into exile would be white. In addition, if the afternoon or evening of their lives, and possibly extending much time as it does for most, since it started so early, it is literally a night than usual. At the end of his work, though still young, up groping in the dark. Then, too, is the simple irony that Oedipus, who was smart enough to solve the puzzle that no one else could solve, did not, like Tiresias threw at him, have the wit to recognize the situation he was living in.
