My autistic niece’s class is going to use the “able” learning system with her. What is that?

They said it stood for “Applied Basics of Language” but that can’t quite be right because I didn’t find anything about it on the web.

I think a Dr Sandberg is one of the doctors who started the program. But I could have the spelling wrong.

Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS)

This is a complex assessment instrument for determining where your child’s language is right now. This assessment breaks language down into developmental components. The value of this assessment is that your child doesn’t waste any time learning what she already knows. It also serves as a developmental curriculum for teachers.

The best thing about the ABLLS is that it shows where there are gaps in a child’s language learning so that these skills can be taught. The ABLLS is the center piece of a style of instruction using applied behavior analysis called Verbal Behavior. It was developed because all autistic children have difficulties with language and communication.

This is a wonderful program and is research based. It has been found to be one of the most successful treatments for children with language disorders.
