The Board Game Revival
By: Geoff Ficke
Each year in February the world's largest Toy Fair held in New York. This is the mecca for buyers, sellers, promoters and inventors of toys, dolls, stuffed toys and games. Every imaginable type of product is displayed tastefully whimsical and exaggerated, Boasting some creative marketing. The event is attended by people from over 100 countries.
This year's Toy Fair reflects what is happening in global economy. Attendance was down, There Were significantly fewer vendors displaying products, the brightness was considerably dimmer and the general mood was bleak. world's largest toy companies Mattel, Fisher Price and Hasbro reported declines in sales of the recently concluded 2008 years. Medium sized sellers had even worse news to report and many seemed to be just hanging in the hope of a strong holiday sales season 2009 to revive their fortunes.
During the last decade or more exciting growth in the toy / game in the world in electronic products. Electronic Arts became a giant video by presenting the action-oriented games of the highly desirable young male demographic. However, even this year Electronic Arts has struggled, sales dropped and, recently, the company announced the resignation of the most prolific game of their design engineers.
Interestingly, there was one area promotes vigor and vitality in the Toy Fair: Games worldly board. Yes, the game type of families often play around the kitchen table after dinner. Parents and children interact, while enjoying time together, talking, negotiating, competing, laughing and bonding. Great concept! Board game sales actually had a record year.
Hasbro introduced several new iterations of the classic Monopoly. The world's most popular board game, Monopoly is played in almost 500 million people around the world. The iconic game, developed during the Depression to mimic the various strata of society during that time, is the standard of gold in the game of table space. In this year's Toy Fair offers new board game were on display as never before and that seemed to be the center of a renewed interest by buyers take note of the nature of the time. The board game is enjoying a renaissance, partly because of the times we live in is have adapted to our sites to the importance of family time.
Video Games are usually solitary or demographic-specific products. Board games offer a totally different game platform. A girl of eight years, his brother 10-year-old sister to visit the University of age and mom and dad can enjoy a game of Sorry. The game is played at a leisurely pace. Lots of voyeur is part of the fun. Soda and popcorn are everywhere, while the family enjoy the game.
I use the product consulting firm deals with a number of toys play and performances each year. Many are very resourceful. The market for this type of product is very competitive, like the more mature consumer categories product. However, the market is always open to the novel, inventive new products. The Great Depression somewhat similar to our current economic circumstances, was a golden era for the ingenuity of consumer products. The opportunity for successful product launch today is so mature.
The key to launching a successful board game, as with many other consumer products, is simplicity. Make sure rules of the game are quick and easy to understand. If the game requires a tutorial and a lot of qualifiers, the likelihood of achieving retail placement and commercial success is minimal. It is important that the competitive aspects of the game depends on a mix of basic skills and chance. All players, regardless of age, education or experience, should have a reasonable chance of winning.
The world is undergoing a change caused by an economic disease that affects virtually all of us. The opportunity to benefit from this setting of social values and attitudes offers unique opportunities for entrepreneurs to offer products with timely features and benefits that fit the times. The return to popularity of board games is a symbol of this new reality.
