It seems to me that the great days of heroism on the high seas, at least on the part of the RN, are now a thing of the past. That is not to say I don’t think that today’s Matelots are anything but the most valiant of men and women; far from it.

Work very very hard to climb the ranks until you reach the right level for your capabilities. If you are a naturally gifted leader you will rise to the top anyway. Work on your leadership and people skills. Heroism is a very subjective thing. In the eyes of many people you will be a hero just by serving your country.
