What will help block chemicals from your face when working in a factory?

My boyfriend works in a metal manufacturing company and something in the air there really bothers his skin. It makes his face burn and feel red after work every day. I suggested face lotion with sunscreen in it but I’m not sure if that will help if it’s a chemical burn.

My guess would be something petrolatum based, or even just simple vaseline, it is after all a skin protectant. It may cause acne though.
