why was there such different reactions in the U.S.A to the countrys involvement in the conflict in vietnam in the 1960?
please explain this question?im confused?
The pro and anti war sides both had valid points. It was a different time and remember there was a draft and most men when they reached 18 were taken into the military and had to serve for 2 years. Alot of young American men from all walks of life were dying over there and no end was in sight. More then 58,000 Americans died in that war. One reason for going to war was to stop the spread of Communism. There was a stategic fear that if South Vietnam went Communist then so would Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and who knows where it would end. It was not in our strategic interest to allow this to happen. We didn’t realize it but the National Liberation Front started out as a Socialist movement and not Communist. We actually wiped them out. But the North Vietnamese were sending in troops dressed like the rebels in the South and they just kept them coming. In order to win the war we would have had to expand the war to North Vietnam and if we did that the Chinese were threatening to enter the war. We were not willing or prepard to have a war with China.
There Were other complications. The Government of South Vietnam was a kingdom which was very corrupt and didn’t care about the people. They were Christians and persecuted the Buddhists. They lost the support of the people. You cannot win a war if you do not have the support of the population.
The American people turned against the war. We didn’t feel that the side that we were fighting for was any better than the other side. We didn’t feel that we should be sacreficing American lives for a war whose outcome had no direct bearing on our lives. There was a movement that was against America being the policemen of the entire world. We were exposed to photos of Buddhists burning themselves to death in South Vietnam as a protest against their government and these were not Communists.
After the fall of South Vietnam to North Vietnam, neither Laos nor Thailand became Communist. Cambodia became a Communist country for awhile to the most vile kind of government imaginable. A government that killed off large segments of its population. One of the major results of the Vietnam War was that we did away with the draft and opted for an all volunteer military.
