The Cold Opening Murder Mystery
I have been producing and performing in live interactive murder mysteries since 1989. I have seen these fun and exciting events executed – pun intended – every which way. I have discovered there are many great ways to create an audience participation murder mystery that will thrill the attendees and I have learned that there are some definite no nos too. Don’t get me wrong, I think that hosting a murder mystery party is one of the absolute best and most memorable evenings that You Can have. People tell me all the time that they have never had so much fun as when they were participating in one of my murder mysteries.
One particular type of murder mystery event that should be avoided is the cold opening murder mystery. My company gets calls all the time from people who feel it would be really fun to not tell their guests that they are at a murder mystery party until the murder happens and the detective takes over. They think it will have great shock value and their guests will love them for it. While we have had a few good experiences with the cold opening, I would say that results are mixed at best for this sort of event. Guests often are shocked when this happens but not always in a good way. Some people actually believe that the murder is real and react in horror. Others get very angry that they have been manipulated by the professional actors that have been embedded in their group. It can be a particularly creepy feeling to be chatting with someone and then discover that they have been putting you on all evening.
I think the cold opening murder mystery falls more into the category of practical joke than that of good theater. I have seen that attendees feel fooled and “punked” and that their party has been hijacked. It wasn’t the way they expected their evening to unfold. They were robbed by their host of the opportunity to prepare for the game. To keep in mind that murder mystery events are part game and part show is of paramount importance. Our murder mysteries are usually staffed with professional actors and entertainers who’s mission is to facilitate a thrilling, exciting, murder mystery experience for the participants who are usually are not professional performers. That is a good reason to inform them prior to the start of the party that they will be participating in a murder mystery.
My experience over the years has been that when informed in advance, these party goers get very excited and prepare. Some come dressed up! Most are able to step into the mingling time with their eyes and ears open, taking note of possible cold blooded killers who may be in attendance with them! Give your party attendees a heads up that they are coming to a murder mystery. They will have much more fun and so will you.

What exactly is In Cold Blood about? And how was it a new genre?
I just need to know what the main story behind In Cold Blood and how is was a new genre back then.
Thanks in Advance!
In Cold Blood, published in 1965, was first serialized in the New Yorker in four installments. It was an instant critical and commercial success, bringing Truman Capote both literary recognition and celebrity status. With its publication, Capote claimed to have invented a new genre, the ”nonfiction novel,” and critics quickly accepted his classification, his methods, and his purpose as a new combination of journalism and fiction.
Truman Capote took the logical step of what had been the territory of popular culture and newspapers and turned it into serious art form for which he coined the term non-fiction novel.
The work is divided into four titled sections, 75 to 100 pages each:
1. The Last to See Them Alive
2. Persons Unknown
3. Answer
4. Corner
Capote wrote In Cold Blood as a literary experiment. He wanted to write a “nonfiction novel.” He felt that he was one of the rare creative people who actually took journalism seriously. The question is whether a book such as In Cold Blood is actually a novel, a creative work, or journalism.

The murder and trial of the Clutter case had garnered big headlines, and many readers probably knew the details of the novel before they began reading it. Capote had to make it interesting even to people who knew the outcome–the book had to be good literature as well as be informative and accurate. The novel is saturated with details that would never have been included in a newspaper. Moreover, the details are carefully picked. Knowing that Capote compiled 8,000 pages of research, the book seems to be a very carefully edited selection of facts and descriptions
