What I know and remember about baseball gloves, frustration
A mid-70s is growing in East Tacoma, not the best neighborhood and not all the worst, had little to do for a child whose fate in life was to stay home with her older sister and younger brother while mom was at work. There was no such things like "after school activities" or "league selection. We had the Boys Club. Only 8 blocks from the house (if you knew the shortcuts, 13 if followed the streets). The grumpy old man running our club children, Jim, was in fact a monument to the commitment. He was still the grumpy old man running when I was in college.
Games were on Saturday and the turnout was generally light. Some parents, some mothers, some Grand-pa. Always had two or more new parents with pouches that received the previous night, proud of how they merge. Some of the mothers were a little calmer. Covered with a More scarf and sunglasses business or just a little extra make-up if the swelling was not so bad.
Grand-pa were always normal. Chewing smoking cigars and discussing something that from the moment left the parking lot. If you do not fight each other than persistent shoulder to shoulder to the referee about his vision. What Funny how I thought I could only imagine what these old people could be seen through the bottoms of bottles of soda that had the glasses. In the morning games always have had lighter attendance. In the afternoon, a few more. Standing at the end of the fence you're drinking the father of a paper bag.
The Club always shirts, caps, bats, equipment, sets and standard GI issue duffel bag to lug it all in. We provided our own gloves. The pants and shoes were brung length and variety. Equipment was purchased mainly in the B & I. With his own celebrity, Ivan the Gorilla, we were all there, all dressed in jeans $ 4, all wore different versions of what was offered, but never talk about it.
As for me, was the Rawlings. 12 "gloves, Genuine leather with a pocket deep well. I used this glove from 1972 to 1983. In a team practice or game. I could identify, career, each glove in our equipment, which belonged to the position he played. The balance of the team could do the same. We did not have much, being there was a lot of pride in our gloves. What helped us make the impossible moves. Catch the ball no-catch. Like the Pro, whose name adorns them. Even after moving to rural Puyallup in 77, players are the same gloves, more variety, but we still know all that is who he is.
Not so with today's players. Gloves seem be designed to last a season. $ 50 – $ 75 annual parent frustration. Love Glove is not the same. disposable tool to proclaim a generation of recycling. Its just beyond my highest consideration.
As a parent, finances are substantially different then when I was growing up. I tend to save my money and buy the best of what I need. This goes for my children. I have no qualms about getting the better end of what is available to meet your needs. My old on a whim decided to audition for a baseball team to select and play up to one year. To my amazement, they took him, but the backyard glove that had taught would not be enough for the rigors they would find. Therefore, no problem, just find a good glove for a pitcher of his left hand. WHAT A JOKE! I was more than a dozen stores and looked through hundreds of gloves.
I soon discovered that the gloves go on sale in January when shipments come and the best selection available. May is good sales in what has remained of this year. Add to this that all buyers of Sporting believe that less than 1% of all players are left-handed and 100% need a glove 12 inch or larger and with many difficulties to get something appropriate for their age. Finally, not all gloves for the right hand throws are available for the left hand strip. It seems that manufacturers also left hand throwers only has the largest gloves too.
As market conditions have virtually wiped out the mom and pop retailers in sporting goods my area, box stores have taken over with little or no ability to special order anything. If it does, its full MSRP + shipping handling +, +, +, annoying. The final selection seemed to have all the credentials, good brand, approved by the king of Little League itself, a little big, but small enough hand pocket to hold it in place, $ 60. Play smart and good pocket.
Within six weeks I was tightening the laces, after 14 weeks, the area finger had been broken off. Glove performance was poor and the frustration was gaining speed. My player was losing faith in their ability to gloves to protect the ball. My faith in this team for him was also lost.
Off to the Internet. Finding a suitable replacement is not necessary to purchase every year. East Bay, Just Diamond Sports Gloves and dominate the google and yahoo searches. All styles of the Big 3 (Rawlings, Wilson, Louisville) is more than some of the increases and stakeholders (Nokom, SSK, Nike, Reebok, etc) but how do you justify a $ 89 glove to $ 350 a one.
How is the model top of youths more than one season. Go to the Internet for their comments and the individual parts that make up a glove. Steerhide, that's the ticket. Normally is thicker and denser than the run of the mill cowhide. Great only used in most high quality gloves. Even newcomers and Reserve Steerhide at the top of the line gear. And when you find the ads that promote their special process is "like" steerhide, so it tells a story solid.
Do you recommend a glove to deliver $ 350 + to a 9yr old, no.
"I can justify $ 120, and compared with prospect of spending $ 60 every year, if I have two years of $ 120 is a balance. If You Can keep throughout the school, then all the better.
Where I do not think a glove steerhide that met all my criteria? http://nw.kelleyusa.com. These guys have just what you need at a price that is fine. It is a small company that offers direct pricing and distribution.
Astute as I can be, I bought a distribution and inventory required. I rationalize this by the fact that his best things I can get a better price and in worst cases, give to the players we have in the family. I am very satisfied with all gloves sent. Everything delivered as promised.
The test is repeated to me is when I go to shows and teenagers come to my table with their parents and I bear witness "this is just as good as the mark (x) we have been watching and half the price!". That seals it for me. These young players spend hundreds if not thousands of hours reading, studying, playing gloves from all sources they can find. To see such enthusiasm only a few minutes after the introduction really reinforces my belief in these gloves.
In general, the best gloves to solve several problems;
1) that last longer, period!
2) only to break them at once.
3) annualized return on dollars spent is higher.
4) yields a lifetime of memories of baseball glove attached to a very personal.
Therefore, it is $ 120 a fair price to pay? I say yes!
